Description

What is Viraday Tablets?

Viraday Tablet is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), which is used for treating HIV infection. This drug filters out the HIV from the blood, it does not cure the disease but is helpful in preventing AIDS. It comes as a capsule, a tablet, and a solution. Viraday combines three proven anti-HIV drugs called emtricitabine, efavirenz and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate into a single pill. If taken everyday, Viraday can prevent replication and mutation of HIV-1 in adults, allowing HIV infected individuals to live long, healthy lives free from AIDS.

Viraday is a combination medicine used to treat HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) in adults. Each tablet contains a combination of three antiretroviral drugs: Emtricitabine 200mg + Tenofovir 300mg + Efavirenz 600mg.

Viraday contains three different anti-retroviral drugs that are effective in treatment of retroviruses (RNA viruses) such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Replication of the HIV virus is caused by the action of viral-specific enzyme reverse transcriptase. These drugs inhibit the action of these enzymes.

Viraday Tablets Uses?

Viraday (Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate/Emtricitabine/Efavirenz) is a treatment for HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) in adults. Viraday is a combination retroviral containing Tenofovir (300mg), Emtricitabine (200mg) and Efavirenz (600mg). These are the generic names for Viread, Emtriva and Sustiva.Viraday is prescribed to treat retroviruses (RNA viruses) such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). It works by inhibiting the viral-specific enzyme reverse transcriptase that causes the virus to replicate.

How does Viraday Tablets work?

Viraday tablets contain a combination of three antiretroviral drugs, efavirenz, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, which are only effective against RNA viruses (retroviruses) like Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

These three drugs each work by inhibiting the action of the viral-specific enzyme reverse transcriptase (RT) which is needed for the virus to be able to replicate. Retroviruses convert RNA to DNA, which is then integrated into the DNA of infected immune cells so that the virus can replicate. Efavirenz is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) and acts by binding to a specific site on the RT enzyme and blocks its action in a manner that is noncompetitive with nucleosides, which are the precursors to the building blocks of DNA and RNA.

Tenofovir and Emtricitabine are both nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI), which means that they block the action of RT by competing with one of the nucleosides needed to transcribe the viral RNA into DNA, becoming incorporated into the chain of newly synthesized viral DNA and preventing it from growing (chain termination).

Emtricitabine is an analogue of cytidine and tenofovir is an analogue of adenosine. The combined action of the three antiiretroviral drugs in Viraday tablets prevents the integration of the virus into the DNA of the infected CD4+ immune cell, which inhibits the replication of HIV so that no more virus can be produced and this reduces the viral load (amount of virus).

Viraday tablets slow down the replication of HIV within your body but does not kill the virus already incorporated in the CD4+ cells or prevent the spread of the infection to others.

  • Emtricitabine belongs to class of medication called antiretroviral medicines. It works by inhibiting the enzyme needed for DNA synthesis (nucleoside reverse transcriptase) thereby lowering the growth and decrease the amount of HIV in body.
  • Tenofovir is an antiviral drug belonging to class nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Its  structure closely resembles the natural structure of viral DNA, that helps it to incorporateitself into the viral DNA. By doing so, it blocks the activity of an important viral enzyme reverse transcriptase which is involved in the replication of viral DNA, a process essential for survival of the virus.
  • Efavirenz belongs to a class of antiretroviral medications called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). It inhibits the replication of HIV, thereby reducing the amount of the virus in the blood.
How to take Viraday Tablets?

Take Tenofovir Disproxil Fumarat, Emtrictabine and Efavirenz HIV medication (Viraday) strictly according to your doctor’s direction or according to the instructions on the medication label. Do not alter the dosage unless your doctor advises you to do so. Also, do not take this medication after the prescribed period is over. All medications come with a patient leaflet. Refer the instructions in them for detailed information on that particular medication.

Take Tenofovir Disproxil Fumarat, Emtrictabine and Efavirenz combination medicine on an empty stomach at bedtime, or as directed by your doctor. HIV is usually treated with a combination of drugs. Always take the prescribed drugs as directed by your doctor. Store this medication in a cool and dry place.

Tenofovir Disproxil Fumarat, Emtrictabine and Efavirenz can cause a false positive drug screening test. Inform the laboratory staff where you have your drug test done that your are taking this medicine. Always store Tenofovir Disproxil Fumarat, Emtrictabine and Efavirenz in a cool and dry place. If you have Hepatitis B, you may develop liver symptoms even after stopping Tenofovir Disproxil Fumarat, Emtrictabine and Efavirenz. These symptoms may be seen for months after stopping. You may be required to take regular tests to monitor your liver function.

Viraday Tablets Contraindications:

Co-administration with voriconazole is contraindicated. Efavirenz, a component of VIRADAY, significantly decreases voriconazole plasma concentrations, and coadministration may decrease the therapeutic effectiveness of voriconazole. Also, voriconazole significantly increases efavirenz plasma concentrations, which may increase the risk of efavirenz-associated side effects. Because VIRADAY is a fixed-dose combination product, the dose of efavirenz cannot be altered.

Viraday Tablets Dosage:
  • Missed Dose:

In case you miss a dose, use it as soon as you notice. If it is close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your dosing schedule. Do not use extra dose to make up for a missed dose. If you are regularly missing doses, consider setting an alarm or asking a family member to remind you. Please consult your doctor to discuss changes in your dosing schedule or a new schedule to make up for missed doses, if you have missed too many doses recently.

  • Overdose:

Do not use more than prescribed dose. Taking more medication will not improve your symptoms; rather they may cause poisoning or serious side-effects. If you suspect that you or anyone else who may have overdosed of Viraday Tablet, please go to the emergency department of the closest hospital or nursing home. Bring a medicine box, container, or label with you to help doctors with necessary information.

Do not give your medicines to other people even if you know that they have the same condition or it seems that they may have similar conditions. This may lead to overdosage.

What are the Side effects of Viraday Tablets?

Viraday (Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate/Emtricitabine/Efavirenz) can result in some unwanted side effects, especially at the beginning of treatment. Many side effects will be minor and temporary. The most common side effects of Viraday are:

  • headaches
  • gastrointestinal conditions (nausea, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain)
  • loss of appetite or eating disorders
  • dizziness and/or fatigue
  • rashes, hot flushes or other skin conditions
  • mood changes, depression, anxiety
  • nightmares, trouble sleeping, insomnia

Viraday Tablets Warnings?

Immune reconstitution syndrome and nervous system disturbances may manifest during the first couple of weeks after starting Viraday, but both should resolve themselves within the first month. Patients taking Viraday should have their viral loads continually monitored along with their renal functions, cholesterol and triglycerides.

Research currently advises people with liver disorders to avoid Viraday. Sudden discontinuation of Viraday can trigger a flare up in patients with hepatitis. Changes in body fat distribution and bone structure are documented as long term side effects of some antiretroviral drugs, so talk to your doctor if you undergo any unexplained physical changes.
