Acivir 200mg DT Tablet Uses?

Acivir 200 is usually taken 2 to 5 times per day for 5 to 10 days as soon as symptoms begin or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with plenty of fluids throughout the treatment. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patients condition and their response to the therapy. The medication can be used to treat conditions caused by the herpes virus but cannot be used to cure herpes.

How does Acivir 200mg DT Tablet work?

Acivir 200mg tablets contain aciclovir, an antiviral agent which is highly active against both types of herpes simplex virus, HSV-I, that causes cold sores and HSV-II that causes genital herpes and also against the closely related varicella zoster herpes virus that causes chicken pox and shingles.

Aciclovir inhibits the action of a viral enzyme (DNA polymerase), blocking viral DNA synthesis without affecting normal cellular processes. This prevents the virus replicating and therefore stops the growth and spread of the virus, relieving symptoms of the infection and helping the body to fight off the infection.

Acivir 200mg  will not cure a herpes infection as the virus can lie dormant in infected cells until reactivated when immunity is low by stress, other illness or even exposure to sunlight, causing new infections like cold sores and shingles, but it does reduce pain and help the sores caused by the infection to heal faster.

How to take Acivir 200mg DT Tablet?

Before you start the treatment, read the manufacturer’s printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will give you more information about aciclovir, and it will also provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you could experience from taking it.

Your dose will depend upon the type of infection you have, so take aciclovir exactly as your doctor tells you to. Typically, doses range from 200 mg to 800 mg, and these doses are taken either three, four or five times daily. Your doctor or pharmacist will tell you what dose is right for you, and this information will also be printed on the label of the pack to remind you about what was said to you.

Space out your doses evenly during the day. You can take aciclovir either with or without food.

Even if you feel your infection has cleared up, keep taking aciclovir until the course is finished (unless your doctor tells you to stop sooner). This is to prevent the infection from coming back. The course of treatment prescribed could last between 2-10 days. If you still feel unwell after finishing the course, go back to see your doctor.

If you have been prescribed a dispersible tablet – these can be stirred into a small glassful (50 ml) of water to make them easier to swallow. You can, however, swallow them as normal if you prefer.

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember and then continue as before. Try to take the correct number of doses each day, but do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to Acyclovir (the active ingredient). Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs or if you have kidney disease. You may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.

Herpes infections are contagious and you can infect other people, even while you are being treated with this medicine. Avoid letting infected areas come into contact with other people. Avoid touching an infected area and then touching your eyes. Wash your hands frequently to prevent passing the infection to others. This medicine will not prevent the spread of genital herpes. Avoid sexual intercourse or use a latex condom to prevent spreading the virus to others.
