Avana is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE5 inhibitor) which works by relaxing muscles to increase blood flow to certain parts of the body. It blocks PDE5 in smooth muscle cells lining the blood vessels supplying corpus cavernosum to the penis. It is a new drug commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction. It is usually a faster acting medication that also passes through the body at a quicker rate than most erectile dysfunction drugs.
Avana tablets 50mg are used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men, which is inability to achieve or maintain a hard erect penis suitable for sexual activity, due to insufficient blood flow into the penis. Avana tablets 50mg relax the blood vessels in the penis increasing blood flow and causing an erection, which is the natural response to sexual stimulation. However, Avana tablets 50mg will only work if you are sexually aroused.
Avana tablets 50mg contain avanafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, that is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men. During sexual stimulation nitric oxide is released in the erectile tissue of the penis which activates the enzyme guanylatecyclase. This enzyme increases levels of a chemical called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which relaxes the blood vessels in the penis and allows blood to fill the spongy erectile tissues to cause an erection.
Another enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) breaks down cGMP preventing blood flow into the penis, which causes loss of an erection. Avanafil in Avana tablets 50mg acts on the erectile tissue of the penis to inhibit the action of PDE5 and increase blood flow to cause an erection. This action of avanafil in Avana tablets 50mg resolves erectile dysfunction by allowing the natural process of sexual stimulation to activate the cGMP mechanism for achieving and maintaining an erection.
You should not take avanafil if you are allergic to it.
Taking avanafil with certain other medicines can cause a sudden and serious decrease in blood pressure. Do not take avanafil if you also take riociguat (Adempas), or if you take a nitrate drug for chest pain or heart problems. Nitrates include nitroglycerin, isosorbidedinitrate, and isosorbidemononitrate. Nitrates are also found in some recreational drugs such as amyl nitrate or nitrite (“poppers”).
To make sure avanafil is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
- heart disease or heart rhythm disorder;
- a recent history (in the past 6 months) of heart surgery;
- a history of heart attack, stroke, or life-threatening heart rhythm problem;
- congestive heart failure;
- angina (chest pain), high or low blood pressure;
- liver disease, kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis);
- a blood cell disorder such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia;

- a physical deformity of the penis (such as Peyronie’s disease); or

Avanafil can decrease blood flow to the optic nerve of the eye, causing sudden vision loss. This has occurred in a small number of people taking Viagra or other drugs similar to avanafil.
Most of these people also had certain pre-existing eye problems or risk factors for blood vessel disorders (such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, coronary artery disease, smoking, or being over 50 years old). It is not clear whether avanafil is the actual cause of vision loss. Avanafil is not for use in women. It is not known whether avanafil will harm an unborn baby.
Although avanafil is not for use in women, it is not known if this medicine passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby.
- Use of nitrates with Avanafil is highly contraindicated. It can cause severe lowering of blood pressure and fainting.
- Individuals having allergy to Avanafil or any other ingredient of the tablet should not administer Avanafil.
- Female use of Avanafil is prohibited.
- Use of Alcohol is to be avoided with Avanafil or any other PDE5 inhibitors because it can lower the blood pressure severely.
The dose can vary from 50 mg to 200 mg depending upon the tolerance, age, medical condition of the patient. It has to be taken orally with or without food. It acts effectively only when consumed 30 minutes preceding physical intercourse. Start with a smallest effective dose. Do not take more than 200 mg of Avanafil a day. No two doses of Avanafil should be repeated within 24 hours.
